Second Opinion Outpatient Service

What is a Second Opinion?

A second opinion refers to obtaining an additional medical evaluation from another physician regarding the treatment you are currently receiving. This is usually sought from an expert in the relevant medical field other than your current primary doctor.

Kano General Hospital has many experienced specialists across a wide range of medical fields, enabling us to provide second opinions for various conditions.

If you already have a preferred doctor in mind, you may request that specific physician. Information on our full-time doctors—including their specialties and clinical experience—is available on our website. If you are unsure which doctor is appropriate for your case, please consult the Regional Collaboration Office.

We also receive support from distinguished physicians from other institutions (including universities). Although their profiles are not listed on our website, the Regional Collaboration Office can introduce the most suitable specialist, including these part-time physicians.

The Purpose and Value of a Second Opinion

You have likely already received an explanation of your treatment plan from your current doctor. However, medical information can be difficult to fully understand, and many patients wonder whether there might be better treatment options.

Modern healthcare emphasizes informed consent, where patients participate in treatment decisions based on clear explanations. More patients now wish to receive treatment only after fully understanding and agreeing to the plan.

For such patients, a second opinion is highly valuable. Receiving another explanation from a specialist at our hospital helps you objectively understand the benefits and limitations of your current treatment. Even if the recommended treatment remains the same, hearing it from another expert often provides reassurance.

Many patients visit the second opinion clinic because their current treatment seems ineffective. While some diseases have limited treatment options, in other cases, a small adjustment or a different approach may significantly improve outcomes. Treatment strategies may also differ greatly between internal medicine and surgery, even for the same disease.

If our specialist recommends a different treatment, they will explain the differences in detail. A written summary of our opinion will be sent directly to your primary doctor.

A second opinion does not mean changing hospitals or doctors. We encourage you to discuss our recommendations again with your current physician.

In rare cases, if the diagnosis itself needs reconsideration or if the recommended treatment cannot be performed at your current hospital, we can introduce an appropriate specialized institution, including our own.

Requests for Patients Seeking a Second Opinion

To provide an accurate and meaningful second opinion, we require a detailed referral letter (medical information document) from your current doctor. This should include:

  • The basis for the diagnosis
  • The reasons for selecting the current treatment
  • Issues or concerns identified by your primary doctor

Even for the same disease, multiple treatment options may exist, and responses vary by patient. Understanding your doctor’s reasoning is essential.

Many patients hesitate to ask their doctor for a referral letter, but physicians generally welcome second opinions as a way to support informed decision-making. This is your health and your life—there is no need to hesitate.

Based on the information provided, our specialist will:

  1. Review your case
  2. Explain their medical opinion to you
  3. Send a written summary directly to your primary doctor

Please note:
・The purpose of a second opinion is to improve the quality of medical care and deepen patient understanding.
・It is not intended to identify medical errors or support legal claims.
・For this reason, we do not provide written reports directly to patients. The written opinion is sent only to the referring physician.
・Our doctors cannot participate in medical litigation.
