Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic Surgery at Kano General Hospital provides care for knee and hip osteoarthritis, as well as sports-related knee injuries such as ACL tears and meniscus injuries. Our doctors choose treatment based on symptoms, activity level, joint condition, and the degree of deformity.

If pain does not improve with conservative treatments, such as intra-articular injections or rehabilitation, surgery may be considered. The goal is to reduce pain, improve joint function, and support daily life.

Joint Surgery

Osteoarthritis of the Knee and Hip

Osteoarthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking. The appropriate surgical method depends on how much the joint has changed and how well the knee or hip still moves.

  • High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO): This procedure may be selected when knee deformity is mild and the knee still bends and straightens well.
  • Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA): This joint replacement may be selected when deformity is severe and knee movement is limited.
  • Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA): This procedure may be performed for patients with osteoarthritis of the hip.

Sports-Related Knee Injuries

Sports-related knee injuries can affect both athletic activity and daily life. ACL tears and meniscus injuries may cause pain, instability, and difficulty moving the knee.

If these injuries remain untreated, joint instability may continue. In some cases, this can also contribute to the progression of osteoarthritis.

  • ACL Reconstruction: For ACL injuries, we perform a double-bundle, two-route reconstruction using the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons.
  • Meniscus Repair: Meniscus tears are sometimes treated by partial removal. However, removing the meniscus can increase stress on the joint. For this reason, we prioritize meniscal sutures whenever possible to preserve the natural joint structure.

Patients who are considering treatment should check the outpatient schedule before visiting. Please also review the general outpatient guide for reception hours and visit procedures.
