Normally, when conducting clinical research, it is carried out after providing explanations either in writing or orally and obtaining consent.

Among clinical research, studies that do not involve invasion or intervention to patients and use only medical information, or studies that use only leftover specimens, do not obtain direct individual consent from all subjects, in accordance with the guidelines established by the government (“Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Biological Research Involving Human Subjects”). Instead, information regarding the research is made public, and opportunities to refuse participation are guaranteed. This is referred to as “opt-out.”
